Float Plane Fly In
By Ted Tanasse
May 2001-- Up in the air! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Better yet, it’s a plane that flies like a bird, lands in the water and the fun never stops. Just ask anyone who had floats in Columbia Park off Edison Street during this year’s Float Plane Fly In. The weather was perfect, the flying was exciting and the Chili Dogs were scrumptious.

The Water Buffalo are a group of guys who get together now and then to fly float planes from all over southwest Washington. Men of honor in the Water Buffalo have nicknames like Catfish, Gadget and Cub Killer.
Now Catfish (Rich Roland) is the main backbone of this group because he has the rescue boat, the U.S.S. Langley (even the boat has a nickname). Without his boat or one like it, there is no flying. All Water Buffalo bow to the Catfish. How did Cat Fish get his name? Well I’m not sure, but earlier this year, he did prove he could stay under water for a period of time in an emergency situation. All I can say is the guy really loves the water and also loves getting out of it.

Gadget (Glenn Ball), was in charge of the chili dogs. The food went down easy. Float flying with chilidogs...it just doesn’t get any better than that.
Cub Killer (Clee Childress) took some great photos of the event. End
