The Nate Dixon Memorial Contest was held at Gary Weaver's field in Othello, Washington July 9th and 10th. There was a pretty small turn out with only 7 contestants; 1 Intermediate, 5 Masters, and 1 FAI pilot. We flew 4 rounds on Saturday and 2 more on Sunday, with pretty good weather. Friday's practice weather was not so good. Fortunately it did calm down for the contest. We did have to deal with a little wind, mostly blowing out all weekend.
The small turn-out made
for a pretty relaxing contest but it did present some judging
challenges. With mostly
Masters Pilots we were forced to use the system I discussed a few months
a go where the Masters Class pilots judge the Masters Class. This
requires proper rotation of judges and normalization of the judge’s
scores. This is not ideal
but the only way we could run the event without having the same judges
in the chair all weekend.
The only negative event that happened during the contest
was the loss of Pavel's new Focus. The plane went down on Friday during
the practice session before I arrived at the field. I do not have all
the details but it was a total loss, and he went on to fly his backup.
Given the fact that the contest was small we all took a break at lunch and my wife, Meri went in to Othello and brought us all lunch. We finished up on Sunday around noon and got everyone home early! Brett Bowen made a bunch of nice Nate Dixon Memorial crosses for our airplanes. This was a very nice way of remembering Nate. Thanks Brett! ![]() The Nate Dixon Memorial Cross! See you in the pits… |
